Understanding Arthritis
Arthritis is a common condition that affects the joints, causing pain, inflammation, and stiffness. It is not a single disease but a term used to refer to more than 100 different types of joint-related conditions.
Arthritis can be a chronic condition, but with the right management strategies, many people live active and fulfilling lives.
Types of Arthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA): The most common form of arthritis, usually caused by wear and tear on the joints over time.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): An autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks the joints, causing inflammation. It can affect multiple joints and lead to deformities if not managed properly.
Gout: A form of arthritis characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, and redness in the joints, often affecting the big toe.
Symptoms and Causes
- Joint Pain: Often worse after periods of inactivity or overuse.
- Swelling and Inflammation: Joints may become swollen and warm to the touch.
- Decreased Range of Motion: Difficulty moving the joint normally.
- Redness: Inflammation can cause the skin over the joint to appear red.
- Genetics: Some types of arthritis, like RA, can run in families.
- Infection: Certain infections can trigger arthritis.
- Immune System Dysfunction: In autoimmune forms, the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues.
- Wear and Tear: Aging and repetitive stress on joints can contribute to osteoarthritis.
